Inherit the Wind Reflection #1

After the class discussion about Hornbeck’s speech on page 34, write a several sentence response to the following:

Choose 1 technological item (TV, pager, internet, cell phone, etc.) and discuss how it has helped
or hurt society. (Has it helped our society progress?)

Then react to one other response. Try to find a topic different than the idea you wrote about. Happy blogging!

The internet has helped society by making a lot of information more accesible to a lot of people. You used to have to go to the library and look around for a while before finding what you wanted, but now you can just google whatever you need and get what you want in a couple seconds.

The Electronic Dictionary has helped society by translating faster and could communicate in many other ways. It also has the calculator, MP3, and could take notes with touch board. People could learn faster and could bring any place because its a small device.

The internet has helped society but it harmed society also. There is bad sites that could make young people age 18 or under lead into bad situations. Also it could give us wrong info. The internet is causing people addict that could harm life styles or life patterns.

Phones have helped society by making communication a lot easier. Before phones were invented you couldn't communicate quickly with people who lived far away. You would have to right a letter and it could take a long time before you got your answer. Now with phones you just click call and you can talk to someone who lives thousands of miles away.

Maggie A (LRT 7/8b) said...

I think cell phones have really helped our society. If we need to send someone a message quickly, we can just text them and they will get it right away. Also, we can contact our family or friends whenever we need to or want to. Like when we're out driving we can just pick up our cell phones and call.
I think that for the most part, the internet has helped us. We can look up things and find them within seconds. I also think that it can be a bad thing because on the internet you can get itno trouble by talking to people you don't know. Spam is alos really annoying because people get so much of it. But in all the internet is much more efficient then looking things up in books.

Hey, people, I'm actually Nathaniel from 5/6 B. This display name was an accident and I will (hopefully) get it changed soon.

The Fax Machine has helped society by making it easier to send some sort of manuscript or photo to other people without too much hassle. It has also helped people connect to each other. Say, 150 years ago, if someone wanted to send someone else a copy of a document long distance, they would have to go through several steps to do it. They'd have to copy it by hand, which could take days, and then find a reasonably reliable transportation to get it there. The whole thing could take a week or more. With a Fax Machine, you can do all of that in 5 minutes.

I agree with Sawyer; phones have helped people to get connected even from far away, within seconds.

I think that T.V. has both helped and hurt our society. It has helped it because when something important happens it usually ends up on the news first. But T.V. has also hurt our society. It has hurt it because a lot of kids sit and watch their favorite T.V. shows instead of doing something active/healthy.

I agree with Maggie; The internet for the most part has helped society but you can also talk to people you don't know. Which, can be very dangerous.

1)I think cellphones have really helped are society. It is a very good device it can keep you safe. It can also work to get directions. That is another good thing about cellphones. I think they have helped are community a lot.
2)I disgree with eric r comment I think that it has hurt are community rather than help it. Everything can ne found on the Internet. And that's not a good thing!

1) Cellphones have impacted society in a ton of good and bad ways. They're great for emergencies like car crashes and when you run out of gas in the middle of nowhere. They're not really good in school, because they're distracting, and Mr. Jensen keeps making those really long announcements about them every day. Also, using texting shortcuts hurts people's spelling and grammar skills.

2) I agree with Maria about television. It's good that it informs you on world affairs the minute they're happening, but a lot of people watch waaay too much T.V. It's bad for their health and it doesn't make global warming any better.

The internet has helped people connect, learn faster, and learn more. There are also more resources for people, which has definitely helped society progress. But sometimes the internet can be dangerous because we can talk to complete strangers who aren't who they say they are.

I also agree with Nora that cell phones can be helpful and useful, but they distract people in school and mess up their grammer and spelling.

I think that cell phones have helped our society. It has helped us in many ways. For instance, it has helped our communication with other people outside of our homes. Before, we could only talk when we were attached to come kind of cord in our homes, or any other place with cord phones. Now, we can be on the go and always moving, while keeping communication in our pockets.
I would have to agree with Anne. The internet has really helped our society. It has helped our society connect with other people and things. However, she also points out that it can be dangerous because we can interact with other complete strangers. I totally agree with this.

T.V. has been both a good and bad thing for our society. It is extremely helpful when there is a disaster or important notice that everyone should be aware of. They can quickly put information on the news that lets thousands of people know. It can also be educational depending on what shows you watch. :)T.V. can also be a bad thing though because some people spend too much time watching it instead of being active or reading or being with friends.

I agree with Kalyna that cell phones are very helpful because you can use them while you're out places, and they don't have to have a cord. This makes them very helpful in cases of emergencies.

I think that computers have both hurt us and helped us in different ways. Computers have helped us in pretty big ways. They have made the world smaller and life easier we can communicate and access a large amount of information.Computers have also hurt us. We become more reliant on them (What happens if it crashes?) They also can lead to hacking, cheating, stealing, and misinformation.

I agree with Joe Electronic Dictionaries are helpful and the internet has hurt society.

Philip C. (LRT 1/2A) said...

TV has helped and hurt our society. TV helps you get informed very quickly and very easily, while it hurts the society because sometimes we waste our time watching way to much of it.

I agree with Sawyer, the phone lets you communicate with people from veyr far away very quickly.

Natalie B-LRT 5/6A said...

I think that the internet has definitely affected society. It has made it incredibly easy for anyone to access tons of information. I think it has helped people to learn a lot more because it is no longer inconvenient to go look up something. If I didn't have the internet and wanted to figure out something, I don't think I would go to the trouble of finding in a book or something. Now though, people probably know more because it only takes a few seconds to find the answer to your question. Search engines in particular are very helpful.
I also have to agree with Anne though. The internet is extremely dangerous and poses threats that weren't here before.

monica o (1/2 B) said...

I think that cell phones have helped society because it's an advantage for people to communicate with other people when they're not available at home or at work.

I agree with Maria that T.V. has hurt society because a lot of kids in America watch tv instead of doing something that's good for them.

Alma P (LRT 1/2 A) said...

Cell phones have helped society by making communication more convenient and faster. Now, if you want to talk to someone far away you can reach them by phone versus writing letters. Talking on the phone is a lot faster than writing letters too. Plus, there is now the advantage of moving while you talk on the phone.

I disagree with Erik about how the internet has helped society. The internet has opened doors to a whole new type of danger. Now, people that you don't know can track your information and hurt you.

Fresa S. said...

I think that TVs have helped and hurt our society. TVs help communicate important information to the public. You can turn on your television and watch the world unfold in your oun living room by watching the news. You can also relax by watching your favorite shows. On the other hand TVs have hurt our society. Poeple watch way too much TV. It is making our society unheathy. Poeple don't excercise enough and eventualy pass those habits on to their children.

I agree with Nora's response. Cell phones are cutting back on poeple's ability to spell and they can be distractions but they can help us communicate when we can't use a normal phone.

Television, in my opinion has hurt society in many ways. Younger and younger children are being exposed to violence. Also, kids spend more and more time infront of the tv instead of playing outside or spending time with their family and friends, increasing the rates of obesity.

I agree with Joe about the internet helping and hurting society, there are now way more oppurtinities for bad influences to take over, but the internet is providing more jobs, as well as entertainment oppurtinities to people all over the world.

Jon M (LRT 5/6 A) said...

The internet has really helped our society. It made it so communication is much much easier.

I also have to agree with Phillip. T.V. has both helped with communication, but has also kept people inside rather than going out and being active.

michael j said...

cellphones have helped society because it makes talking to people from anyplace possible before you had to go into a building to talk on the phone so if you out on a job no one could call you.

I think that the internet has helped society because it makes information instantly available.

The cellular telephone has impacted society enormously. If you are in a car accident in the middle of knowhere and you have a cell phone with service, you can immediately call for help. It has helped businesses, and therefore society, progress ever since the invention. Do people even use pagers anymore? Now there are new phones like the Voyager, the Sidekick, and the iPhone for anybody to purchase and use anywhere at anytime. It's amazing.

The downside of a cell phone is...well, I just can't think of any.

I agree with Sawyer that phones are a good thing. They make it a lot easyer to communicate with people long distance.

Also, they make it easier to communicate with people far away from you. However, they have also had some bad impacts on our society. Lots of kids growing up use cell phones so much that they don't really know how to have a real conversation with someone. Also, it distracts people so that they don't put their time into more important things.

I agree with Fresa that Television has helped and hurt our society. TV is a great source of entertainment and can help us get news quickly. However, it also sometimes sends people the wrong messages, and is causing people to not excercise as much.

I dont know if this counts as a technological item but, I think that reality shows have hurt our society. Even though they are fun to watch every week, I think they give us false ideas. For example, the show America's Next Top Model. That is not actually the way modeling works, and it isn't the way to become a top model.

I agree with Erik, that the internet has helped our society but I believe it has hurt our society. I think it has hurt our society has hurt our society because it contains many things that might not always be true, but you learn to not always trust the iternet.

I think that the cell phone has in many ways helped our society but also hurt it. It has helped by making communication faster, easier, and more convenient. They can also be used in for emergencies. Wether its texting, talking on the phone, or playing games cell phones can cause many distractions for people of all ages.

I agree with Fresa that tv is good for informing but some people watch an unhealthy amount of television.

Cell phones have definitely helped society by making it a lot easier to communicate with others. They are easy to bring anywhere, and if you ever need to get a hold of anyone, you can text them or call them from anywhere. It's also hurt society a little bit because now a lot more people spend time on their phones rather than doing something else, like spending time with their family.

I agree with Fresa, that TV has hurt and helped our society. Tv is really good for entertainment, and to get news quickly, but it can also be bad. Sometimes it shows people the wrong idea of what they should be like.

The TV has both helped and hurt society. It made it easier to see things, such as the news, or a sports game, and more convenient. But it also made people lazier, like how they'd do that instead of going outside or something.

I agree with erik, sort of. It did make things more convenient, but once again people can also be doing that instead of active things.

The Internet has had wide reaching affects on society. Many of these affects are good but I believe the negative aspects outweigh them. For example, before the internet, it was not possible to pirate songs, software and other creative works. Also, internet thieves are constantly hacking into banks and stealing peoples credit cards and sometimes, even their money. None of these crimes was possible before the Internet was invented.

Sawyer K (LRT 1/2A) said...

I also agree with Erik Rehnberg. The internet does help society by making information very accesible. I also think the internet has caused many problems though such as false information, online predators and other things.

I think television has helped and hurt society in a few ways. It has helped it because there are news updates constantly on tv so you always know what is happening if you are watching. Also, it allows you to follow sports teams and watch your favorite shows. It has hurt society because some people definitely spend too much time watching tv even though they should be doing something else.

I disagree with something Nora said about cell phones. Although most people don't use "perfect grammar" while texting, that doesn't mean that it could actually affect their grammar skills in school. Tons of people have cell phones at school and yet my ELA class has like 30 people in it!

The internet has helped society by making information
easier to access and by helping people communicate. If you need info for a project you don't need to look through books to find what you need, that takes forever. You can just google what you want, save tons of time and pobably find better info. It helps people communicate, with im and email, and talk to people they havn't seen in a long time with facebook myspace etc. It hasn't really hurt society.

Oh, i forgot to say that i agree with Brian that a lot of people spend too much time watching TV and it wastes time.

The cell phone has helped society because it improves our communication with our parents. For instance, if we had gotten lost, we could just call our parents.

The internet has created a lot of problems to us. Once you post something, it'll be there forever and you can't do anything about it. Another bad thing about the internet is that it can be addictiing which is very bad. There are also extremely bad sites for young people. All in all things have helped us positively and also negatively technology wise.

Cell phones have helped society in many ways. For one, they make communication a lot easier and faster. You can text, which is also quite easy. Another way that the cell phone has helped is that you can communicate wherever you want.

I agree with Maria K. The television really has helped society with news reports and entertainment. It has hurt society because people are getting addicted to it and getting obese. I really think that TV was an important invention.

Ellen!! said...

The television has hurt our society by displaying & informing people of explicit, immature things that could influence the young people. The newspaper is a good and more helpful about what is wrong in the world vs. TV.

I agree with Clara K, cell phones are helpful for keeping safe and communicating quickly.

Laurel W(7-8 B) said...

I think the cell phone has helped society communicate the best, because if we didn't have phones we would have to wait for letters in the mail or just rely on email, which means we could only communicate when we're on a computer. A lot of phones have mobile email so its almost a two in one. If your car crashes and you need to talk to someone immediatly its easiest just to pick up your phone and call them. Texting is also great because you can send a message quickly without having to actually call the person. I also agree with the statement that computers help society because most people do their research or write a paper on a computer. It's a great way to get organized and get the information you need. This blog is a perfect example.

I agree with sawyer, I think phones have made communication very easy, and a lot quicker.

The cell phone helped society a lot. It helped by making it a lot easier to talk to people at long disatances. It also invented texting, which is a slower way of communicating. When you have a practice or something where you need a ride home, it is a lot easier to just call you parents so that its easier for them to find you. That is how the cell phone has helped society.

The internet has made communication very different in many ways. In some ways very efficient but in others not very reliable. Sometimes the internet is a great way to communicate with friends and do homework. But other times is that people can act different on the internet than how they would in real life, which isnt the best thing. I think over all though, the internet has helped our society's progress. I agree with Kalyna because I think cell phones have helped our society's progress by making communication way more efficient.

I think that cellphones have revolutionized society in both good and bad ways. One good thing about these technological marvels is that you no longer have to be a few feet from your house to contact someone. A bad thing about cellphones is that they almost assign social status. if you have a nice phone people will think you must be cool if you have such a cool phone. Well thats just a little i have to say about cellphones.
